2017 saw same-sex couples across Australia spend months campaigning for their right to marry the person they love.
So, in light of the fantastic result and the Marriage Equality Act being passed in Canberra prior to Christmas, now is the time for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community to celebrate – starting with Melbourne’s 31st Midsumma Festival.
One of the top five LGBTI celebrations in the world, Midsumma will see in this brighter, fairer future for all Victorians in colourful style. And for the third year running, we’re throwing our support behind this state’s iconic arts and cultural event.
“We’re thrilled with the outcome of last year’s efforts to grant equality for Australia’s same-sex couples,” says AGL’s Richard Wrightson, Executive General Manager, Wholesale Markets, and Executive Sponsor of AGL Shine – an employee network for more than 300 LGBTI+ members and allies.
From Midsumma to Mardi Gras Film Festival
After pulling down the AGL Pride Parlour at Midsumma’s Carnival Day and hitting St Kilda’s Fitzroy Street for the annual Midsumma Pride March, we’re heading to Sydney for the third year in a row for the Harbour City’s world-famous Mardi Gras Film Festival.
“2017’s festival was an absolute blast,” says Belinda Hughes, Sponsorship Manager at AGL, “and with a particularly strong selection of movies lined up to screen this year, we are set for another successful festival.”
Keep pushing for change
At AGL, we were honoured to be awarded Gold Tier Status at the 2017 Australia Workplace Equality Index Awards.
“It’s reassuring to see common sense prevailing and positive change coming about, but we still have a long way to go – especially for our people in regional areas,” says Richard.
“Last year, we were proud to support the AGL Loy Yang North Gippsland Football Netball League’s first ever Pride Cup down in Traralgon. It successfully highlighted the need for more diversity in sport and demonstrated to our people that regardless of where you work or the job you do, we take treating one another equally and with respect very seriously.”
“We look forward to getting out there again for the League’s 2018 Pride Cup.”
